Zooplankton play an important role in a lake’s ecosystem and food chain. Freshwater zooplankton are dominated by four major groups of animals: protozoa, rotifers, and two subclasses of the Crustacea, the cladocerans and copepods.

The use of macroinvertebrates in aquatic ecosystems as indicators, including the community structure and species composition, began over a century ago and is now well established in many countries over the world.
